Training

The National Pike District, the Baltimore Area Council, and the BSA National Council offered a very wide and varied array of training programs.

2008 – 2011 Training Requirements

In support of the council’s Strategic Plan of having every Scout led by a trained leader, the executive board of the Baltimore Area Council has announced new training requirements for 2008 – 2011.

In 2008, all Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, and Crew Advisors are required to complete the basic training for their position before the council will renew their unit’s charter.

In 2009, this training requirement will be expanded to include the Committee Chair of each unit.

In January 2010, all newly registered “direct contact” leaders, age 21 and over, must complete the basic training for their position by the unit’s re-chartering date or the council will not register that person in that position.

In January 2011, any 18, 19, and 20-year old Assistant Scoutmasters must complete training by the year of their 21st birthday.

This training requirement would not apply to existing leaders unless they change their position after January. Limited exceptions may be considered by the Council Training Chair based on individual circumstances. Our hope is that over the next four to five years, as we train all of our new leaders coming into our organization, we will realize our goal of having every Scout led by a trained leader.

National BSA studies have shown that on that, on the whole, Scout units led by trained leaders present a higher-quality program that retains boys longer in Scouting. This is key to our council’s long-range plan, which calls for retaining boys longer so as to have a positive impact on their values and character.

Wagon Wheel: Scouting Fundamentals Training for Adults

Twice a year, the National Pike District offers Wagon Wheel, a series of sessions providing Scouting Fundamentals Training for adults.

Learn the objectives and methods of Boy Scouts to implement a quality program.

Why Attend Wagon Wheel Training?

Scout leaders need to know the objectives and methods of Boy Scouts to implement a quality program that will help their Scouts advance and keep them interested in the program. Parents will benefit by understanding how the program operates, allowing them to better support their sons. Wagon Wheel adult training offers this and more. But, the best reason to attend is the fun you will have.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in providing the best program possible to his or her Scouts should attend. This includes Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Webelos leaders who will be transitioning into Boy Scouts in the coming year, Committee members, and anyone else involved (or who may want to be involved) in the Boy Scout Program who wishes to gain a better insight into the workings of a troop. This course is a "must" for any parents who are interested in learning what their sons are doing, and how to support them in Boy Scouts.

Watch for announcements for the next Spring or Fall Wagon Wheel events in the NPD Headlines section of this web site.

PathFinder II Junior Leader Training

The PATHFINDER II program is designed to provide a “step above” the troop provided junior leader training, but not quite the full, heavy duty experience offered at a full week JLT session. The course follows the national guidelines for JLT development, utilizing many sources available today and will be the same format, with minor revisions as the course in the past.

Your Senior Patrol Leader and any member of the troop leadership should be urged to participate, along with any boys that you and the leadership of the troop feel would benefit from this learning experience.

Watch this website for announcements of the next Pathfinder II weekend.

Course For Wood Badge

The Course For Wood Badge is the premier advanced leadership training program for adult Scouters. It is designed to provide Scouters with leadership skills necessary to significantly improve the areas of Scouting they serve. It gives Scouters the opportunity to experience a 'mountaintop experience' and the joys of Scouting. All qualified Scouters who want to improve their personal leadership skills are encouraged to attend.

The course requires a committment of two 3-day weekends, and application period of up to 18 months to apply and assess what you have learned. Qualifications: Each candidate adult participating in Wood Badge must be currently registered with the Boy Scouts of America, and have completed both New Leader Essentials and the Program Specific Training provided for their primary position in Scouting and have a working knowledge of their program area.

First Aid and CPR Courses

These courses are being presented by National Pike District Scout leaders who are also Red Cross instructors, and are recognized providers of the courses to Boy Scouts and their leaders. The courses are also open to other adults associated with scouting. In other words, if they aren't registered with BSA, they are still welcome to come to the training. Siblings (ages 11 and up) can sign up if there is room. We welcome Girl Scouts and their leaders too.

If anyone desires Child CPR, Infant CPR, Adult AED or Child AED Training, please let us know a week ahead so we can try to work it in.

If troops have 8 or more people who would like to schedule a course offering at their meeting place, please contact Tammy Cinotto at least a month prior to when the course is desired to coordinate it.
