Financial assistance for a needy scout to attend camp.
Boy Scout Troop 874 has a Campership (like scholarship) to honor their long-time Scoutmaster, George Baker. The campership makes funds available to attend summer camp or any other camping outing to one Cub Scout (Boy Scout and Venture Scout too) who would not be able to attend camp without financial assistance.
If you need financial assistance, you can contact Troop 874 directly and get the application process started. Applicants must be currently registered in a Venturing Crew, Boy Scout Troop, or Cub Scout Pack which is chartered to a sponsoring organization in the National Pike District. All information will be held in confidence by the selection committee of Troop 874. The deadline for campership requests is May 6, 2008.
April 12 -- Session 1: New Leader Essentials and Troop Committee
April 19 -- Session 2: Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster
May 2 to 4 -- Session 3: Outdoor Leader Skills
Learn the objectives and methods of Boy Scouts to implement a quality program.
Why Attend Wagon Wheel Training?
Scout leaders need to know the objectives and methods of Boy Scouts to implement a quality program that will help their Scouts advance and keep them interested in the program. Parents will benefit by understanding how the program operates, allowing them to better support their sons. Wagon Wheel adult training offers this and more. But, the best reason to attend is the fun you will have.
Who Should Attend?
Anyone interested in providing the best program possible to his or her Scouts should attend. This includes Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Webelos leaders who will be transitioning into Boy Scouts in the coming year, Committee members, and anyone else involved (or who may want to be involved) in the Boy Scout Program who wishes to gain a better insight into the workings of a troop. This course is a "must" for any parents who are interested in learning what their sons are doing, and how to support them in Boy Scouts.
2007 information and forms are HERE.Learn safe and successful overnight camping.
Join us Saturday, April 12 from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Columbia Academy. Lunch is provided. Cost is $10. Advance registration required as space is limited to 40 participants. Click on the registration form below to get started.
Why "BALOO" training?
A pack camp out is a great way for families to have fun and build confidence in outdoor skills. This kind of camping is not the rugged high adventure outing geared toward older Boy Scouts. It is what you might call "soft camping", where families can simply drive up to a campsite and pitch a tent within a few feet of their vehicle's rear bumper. The emphasis is on family fun activities that don't require a lot of advanced outdoor skills.
This one day session will give your pack's outdoor activity leader the tools to conduct a safe and successful overnight camping experience.
AFTER COMPLETING BALOO TRAINING YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
A member of your pack committee must be BALOO trained for Pack camping.

The National Pike District is presenting a JUNIOR LEADER TRAINING WEEKEND, called PATHFINDER II, in the Spring of 2008.
Your Senior Patrol Leader and any member of the troop leadership should be urged to participate, along with any boys that you and the leadership of the troop feel would benefit from this learning experience.
The PATHFINDER II program is designed to provide a "step above" the troop provided junior leader training, but not quite the full, heavy duty experience offered at a full week JLT session. The course follows the national guidelines for JLT development, utilizing many sources available today and will be the same format, with minor revisions as the course in the past.
Registration will be made on a first come first serve basis and will be cut off with 32 participants. Please register NO MORE than 4 boys per troop. Additional scouts can be put on the waiting list.
If your troop has the leadership resource to assist in the weekend, the help would be greatly appreciated.

Kahoot Products Inc. has issued a voluntary product recall of the BSA Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kits. These kits contain a Totem Badge or Fob, which in product testing showed excessive ammounts of lead in the paint.
Of primary concern is to get the totem badge (fob) out of the Cub Scouts possession. The totem badge should be kept in a safe place where only adults have access to them.
The recall does NOT include the Tiger Cub Recognition Kits.
UPDATE:
Starting December 1, 2007, you can exchange the recalled Immediate Recognition Kit Plastic Patches for new ones. They are even having a contest with nice prizes (ends February 29, 2008).

We have an opportunity to help again in 2007 through our Scouting for Food program. Most units distribute bags to homes across Howard County and neighbors fill the bags with nonperishable food, and set the filled bags out for Scouts to pick-up. Other units make arrangements to collect food at local stores
More information is on the Scouting For Food website. The weather tomorrow will be cold at dawn, though not as cold as past Klondikes. Schooley Mill can be quite windy (though the forecast for tomorrow is calm), so dressing in layers with an outer windbreak (ski pants and scarf) is a good idea.
Conditions are ICY. Consider bringing a ski pole, walking stick, or staff to provide extra stability. There is approx 3 inches of frozen snow on the trails, a hard crust that does not break under foot.
Sneakers are a BAD IDEA. They don't have good tread for the icy conditions, and they have no insulation. After an hour standing and walking on the tundra, a boy wearing sneakers will have frozen feet.
If you get cold, consider taking a time-out from the trail and go to the Ulcer Gulch. They'll have warm food and drinks. If you really need to warm up, the Multi-Purpose Building will be open -- you can get something to eat at Ulcer Gulch and take it into the Multi-Purpose Building to warm up.
The National Pike Klondike Derby is Saturday, February 17th. We will be at Schooley Mill Park.
YOU MUST RE-REGISTER. Units that do not confirm their registration by the registration due date (February 11th) will be removed from the starting sequence.
We will use the registration order of all units from the previous registration (January 6th) in order to establish the starting sequence. This means that a units starting times on the trails should be little changed, unless the unit requests a change in starting time. In general, requesting an earlier time will not change anything, since almost everyone wants to go as early as possible. However, if you want a later start than you were originally assigned, we can probably accommodate you.
Units are free to change their registration numbers (add or subtract boys and/or sleds). HOWEVER, additional sleds for units will be wait-listed behind the sleds that we could not fit on the trail before.
Registrations are due at 9:00 P.M., Sunday February 11th. Registration via e-mail is strongly encouraged; you do not need to mail paper copies of your registration materials.
Your unit registration check from January 6th is unlikely to perfectly match your revised registration. We will make adjustments accordingly on the day of the event. Units do not need to send a new check before then (unless you never paid last time).
PLEASE CONSIDER volunteering to run a station. Our original trail plan had 23 stations; I doubt that all 23 station staffs will be able to support the re-schedule date, so we will undoubtedly need some new volunteers.
Outdoor trail activities for Tigers through Boy Scouts is being held this year at Schooley Mill Park.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to read the instructions regarding carpooling, parking, event stickers, and drop-offs.

After walking the trails this afternoon with the Schooley Mill Park Manager, it was agreed that tomorrow's Klondike must be postponed. Trail and field conditions will not support the level of activity that our 1800 people will inflict on the park without the possibility of significant damage -- apparently it's pretty wet and muddy out there already.
Camping for Boy Scout units is still allowed both Friday and Saturday night.
A make-up date is being planned, so stay tuned.

“Orienteering is meant to be a cross-country race with map and compass through unknown terrain, a kind of treasure hunt for strategically

Do you regularly attend Roundtable or other meetings of the National Pike District or Baltimore Area Council? You can help this website by becoming a reporter. Its EASY.
Writing skills not needed. Just go to a meeting, grab all the handouts and send them to the webmaster. Include a note about any important verbal announcements, such as a correction to a handout, date change, etc. (No, we don't want the minutes of the meeting.)
The job is more like a pick-up courier than a reporter. If you also scan the handouts, or write a few sentences on each, you can be an Ace Reporter.
Announcements and flyers at meetings are the primary source for announcements on this website. Ye old NationalPike.org webmaster cannot always make it to monthly meetings, so we are trying to form a pool of reporters to ensure covereage. Each month, we'll coordinate to make sure major meetings are covered.
No Pultizer Prizes, but you will be doing an important service to help get the word out.
Most pressing need is covereage for Cub Scouts Roundtable.
