Cache to Eagle - Geocaching

Get in the Game! with Geocaching

As part of the BSA 100th Anniversary activity, National Pike plans to establish a Cache to Eagle Series.

What could be a more natural partnership – Scouting and geocaching! Both programs love and support the outdoors, and both get us all away from the TV and video games!

This series of caches highlight another component of Scouting: Service. All Scouts perform many hours of community service, from collecting food each year to a myriad of conservation projects. This series highlights just a few of these.

The first 12 were set in Marin County, California and National Pike is plans to set a “Cache to Eagle” series in our district.

Each cache location has a clue in addition to the normal cache contents – each clue is a point of the Scout Law. When a person finds all 12, they are eligible for a patch. This way, our Eagle service projects will be seen by thousands of geocaching members of the community. The Scouts get their work highlighted and can visit sites for ideas if they haven’t done a project yet. And they also love geocaching. Everyone wins here!

The projects need to show significant and long lasting improvements that benefit the community - the project also should be able to stand the test of time, as the public cache will be there for some time. For example, trail maintenance or clearing is a great idea for an eagle project but could overgrow quickly, and then the public just sees an overgrown trail. Trail BUILDING is different, if you see what I mean. There are usually LOTS to choose from.

The guidelines for setting a Cache to Eagle Series of caches can be found at http://www.geoscouting.com/pdfs/c2eguidelines.pdf.
